Evaluation of extreme effects in structures

Marie-Curie ITN project TEAM

In the Marie-Curie TEAM project, time extrapolation methods were applied and tested in order to determine the extreme effects of traffic on engineering structures, over the lifetime of the structures with the considered exceedance probability (return period). The PhD thesis of Xiaoyi Zhou13(2010 – 2013) provided the opportunity to propose a method based on the generalised Pareto distribution, and to compare the different extrapolation methods. This work made it possible to assess the safety margin for these existing structures, which are subjected to stresses that have changed since the design of the structure14, 15, 16, 17,18,22.

These works were carried out on the basis of traffic data measured by French weighing equipment.

Marie-Curie ITN Infrastar project

The Marie-Curie ITN Infrastar project (2016 – 2020) focused on the links existing between instrumentation – structural models – decision-making, for wind turbines and bridges. Therefore, multiple cases studies were addressed, such as the Millau Viaduct. Mariia Nesterova's thesis5 (2016 – 2019) concentrated on load combination (traffic and wind) and on its influence on structures in terms of extreme loads and declining lifespan2,6.

Assessment of effect of traffic loads on bridges

In parallel with this work, the laboratory is studying the effect of traffic loads (and other mobile and/or changing loads) on engineering structures. This may involve general studies on the impact of changes in regulations in terms of the weights and dimensions of HGVs11, 20, 21, or directly studies on HGV loads.

The possibility of a European Bridge Formula 19 has also been studied.

In addition, the laboratory has worked and is still working in various European projects on the subject: the FP7 Transformers project10 (2013 - 2017, development of hybrid and adaptable heavy goods vehicles), the CEDR FALCON3,7,8,9 project (2016 - 2018, development of performance criteria for heavy goods vehicles), the ENSEMBLE4 project (2018 – 2021).

Perspectives

This work is currently being continued in collaboration1 with the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München). The Infrastar project has left a lasting and annual result an annual summer school, named Infrastar training School.
